UPDATED Feb 2023
For a great conversation about essential oils for thyroid support – check out my interview with Scott A Johnson (essential oil expert) on the Let’s Talk Thyroid podcast. Listen here.
I know a number of people who follow my page and are in this group have thyroid issues like me. I have had Hashimoto’s for 25+ years and have over time, taken an increasingly holistic approach to managing my thyroid health. To read about my holistic approach to managing my thyroid, have a read of this article. The purpose of this article is to share with you a bit about how I use essential oils for thyroid support and which oils in particular I use regularly.
UPDATE: I now run a Facebook group with hundreds of people with thyroid issues. We talk all things thyroid, essential oils, diet and lifestyle. An holistic approach. It’s free to join and when you do I’ll send you a thyroid checklist.
Since April 2016 I have included doTERRA essential oils and products into the mix for my thyroid health. The whole reason I got into essential oils was to support my thyroid as I had heard through my naturopath that they might help. I had never thought much about essential oils and certainly hadn’t really thought about using them as part of my thyroid health ‘regime’ but thought it worth giving it a go and the rest, as they say, is history! I have learnt how important it is to not use any old essential oils you find on the shelf of your supermarket but to ensure they are pure & have therapeutic qualities. doTERRA is the worlds largest and most rigorously tested essential oils. You can read all about their standards/testing here.
Essential oils have pervaded our home and lifestyle – not just for my thyroid but for many other aspects of general health and wellness. This has of course happened over time as my knowledge (& budget) has expanded. As soon as I ordered my first oils (frankincense, lemongrass and peppermint), I started reading and researching and soon became fascinated about the scientific components of the oils and how they can impact the human body. I read about oils I wanted to try, I bought more, read more, tried more, bought more and decided to incorporate them into my business too. I say to people now, “I’m warning you, they can be addictive, but in all the good ways!” If you’re ready to try essential oils, I’ve set up this page to show you the cheapest way to do this.
Essential Oils are PART of my holistic approach
Here is an article I’ve written about my holistic approach to managing my thyroid – essential oils and other doTERRA products are only PART of this approach. I also use food, lifestyle and some medication for my thyroid health too. Essential oils have been a really helpful part and I have been able to adjust my thyroid medication since using essential oils but it’s an ongoing journey which is regularly monitored by my health professionals.
Essential Oils for Thyroid Health
These are the oils that I have researched as being helpful for various aspects of thyroid health. You should do your own research and work out what might address the issues you have with your thyroid. With Hashimoto’s so many bodily systems are impacted so I think there can be a multi-pronged approach. To keep my approach simple, I’m going to share the oils I use specifically for my thyroid, then those I use for gut health, managing my stress and then my cellular support. Remember this is what is working for me, and is having an impact after using them for over a year. I believe that for the most part essential oils are part of a longer term system support and are not a quick fix.

Essential oils in my personal thyroid support blend
These oils I have added in this order. I started with simply adding a few drops of frankincense, lemongrass and peppermint into my facial oil. Now I have this roller bottle I have made up and I either roll it over my thyroid morning & night or on my feet.
Update 2023: I’m not really using the thyroid roller anymore – I have found in the past the skin over my thyroid is easily irritated but I do add many of these oils to my facial oil and apply over my neck – it’s more diluted that way and I don’t seem to have any issues.
Frankincense – Known as the ‘King of the oils’ this is what I believe is the KEY ingredient! It is calming, provides cellular support, digestive support, brain health, fab for skin. Crosses blood brain barrier. Soothes and supports the nervous system.* Search pubmed.gov for research done into Frankincense essential oil
Lemongrass – Digestive support, supports a healthy level of inflammation.
Peppermint – Digestive support, energising, refreshing. Great energy boost. Try putting a drop in your hands, rubbing them together and holding your hands over your nose and mouth and breathing deeply. Perfect for the mid-afternoon slump!
Myrrh – Reduces feelings of stress, supports a healthy level of inflammation. Good for the skin. Enhances frankincense and vice versa.
Clove – High levels of phenols which helps with cell receptors and cellular communication, powerful antioxidant properties.* Helps to quench free radicals and maintain a healthy immune system.* Soothes and supports the nervous system.*
Basil – Helps inflammation + adrenal support. Promotes mental alertness and lessens occasional anxious feelings.*
Marjoram – I use to support spleen which is responsible for antibodies so supports healthy antibody level. Valued for its calming properties and positive effect on the nervous system.*
Oils that support other systems affected by Hashimoto’s. Stay tuned for specific articles on each of these topics.
Essential Oils For Digestion
We know how important gut health is! These are my favourite gut support oils. Digestzen, peppermint, fennel, ginger, frankincense, lemongrass. My favourite really is Digestzen which is a blend – I like to add a drop or 2 to a veggie cap and swallow it to get it directly into my digestive system.
Essential Oils for Stress
It’s important to manage stress to keep inflammation at bay. These are my favourite oils for staying cool, calm and collected! Balance, Lavender Peace (AKA Serenity – helps me wind down and sleep at night), Peace. Surprise surprise, frankincense can also be soothing and calming.
Essential Oils for Metabolism
Let’s face it this is a HUGE aspect of many people’s Hashimoto’s/underactive thyroid experience. We gain weight easily and find it hard to lose weight. These oils are certainly no miracle or short term fix, but used consistently over a longer term can help with managing huger, cravings and balancing blood sugars.
Smart & Sassy (in the US market it’s known as Slim & Sassy) – contains grapefruit, cinnamon, ginger, peppermint and ginger.
UPDATE Feb 2023: Check out the new MetaPWR blend which will be replacing Smart & Sassy/Slim & Sassy. It’s the same oils in a new ratio based on studies done by doTERRA.
Grapefruit – can help with managing hunger.
Cinnamon – is great for helping balance blood sugar levels so fabulous for preventing those mid-afternoon sugar crashes and consequent sugar CRAVINGS!
Essential Oils for Immune Support.
Check out my article on How to Support your immune system naturally
My go-to oils for immune support are:
Frankincense – I use daily anyway.
On Guard – as needed. I will diffuse or take a drop or 2 in a veggie cap if feeling unwell.
Oregano – as needed. I will diffuse or take a drop or 2 in a veggie cap if feeling unwell.
Essential Oils for Liver Support
It’s important to support our detoxification pathways. I no longer have a gall bladder so I know that my liver needs extra support. I have often take supplements prescribed by my health professionals for liver support. From an essential oil perspective, I like to use Zendocrine which is a blend of Tangerine Peel, Rosemary Leaf, Geranium Plant, Juniper Berry and Cilantro to help support my liver, kidneys, colon and lungs.
Essential Oils for Adrenal and Energy Support
As I’ve said above, peppermint can be a great one for an energy boost. I also love the blends Motivate and Elevation. Citrus oils in general are known to be uplifting and energising.
It’s important for energy to have a good night’s sleep so oils like Lavender Peace or pure lavender can be great for sleep. I also like Roman Chamomile blended with Lavender Peace and Juniper Berry in a little water spray bottle that I spray on my sheets, pillow and PJs.
Basil essential oil which is in my thyroid blend is there for adrenal support – I occasionally also rub a little of this over my adrenals.
doTERRA Supplements
Most of us with Hashimoto’s take or will have taken 100s of different supplements over the years. These are the ones from doTERRA that I have either taken for a season and found helpful, or take on a regular basis.
LifeLong Vitality – set of 3, doTERRA’s top selling product. These are new to the Australian market and are TGA approved and Australian Made. Here is the PDF with the specifications and research.
DDR Prime – in some ways this could replace the thyroid blend above as it includes many of the same oils.
- Frankincense: Promotes a healthy response to free radicals*
- Wild Orange: Supports a healthy cellular response*
- Lemongrass: Protects against environmental threats*
- Thyme: Broad-spectrum activity in promoting immunity and cellular health*
- Summer Savory: Supports healthy response to oxidative stress*
- Clove: Powerful antioxidant properties*
- Niaouli: Supports cellular immunity*
Mit2Max – This is specifically for mitochondrial support and good for when energy is particularly low.
Deep Blue Polyphenol – I use these when the aches and pains get the better of me. That is more or less under control at the moment so I’m not presently taking these. I find the rub that is in this range is enough for me to use topically at the moment, but this supplement has frankincense and turmeric and I’ve found really helpful in the past.
I know this seems like a lot!
You certainly don’t need to try all of these! I’ve tried over a 12 month + period and have incorporated essential oils thoroughly into my daily life. I started small and have bought and tried different products over time. Some I diffuse, some I apply topically, some I take internally. I can in all honesty say I feel my body and mind are in a better places than before I started using them!

Is this for hyperthyroidism as ell as hypo?
whatannabelcooks says
Hi Angie,
I have hypo (Hashimoto’s) so this is what I’ve used to support that. I’ve read that a few of the same oils support hyper too but not sure about this blend specifically.
Cheers,
