It’s an interesting question really. What does wellness mean? It probably means different things to different people. Several months ago I tried to really distill down what the purpose of my website (& therefore my business) and I worked out that it is to ‘Inspire Wellness’, but what does that look like?
Wellness could mean a whole range of things. I think for me personally I’ve thought of wellness as almost an unattainable thing – like health perfection, which I know is a bit silly, but I’m a bit tough of myself, so I tend to be fighting for painfree, symptom free, optimal weight, low stress. That’s might not even be wellness at all. Perhaps it’s the process of improving your health towards wellness?
I’d love to know what you think. Comment below or head over to my Facebook page today for a discussion. As you know I’m in the middle of a 7 day blogging challenge and today’s blog is to start a discussion, so …. what does wellness mean to you?
Vicki says
I think of wellness as feeling great all over, inside and out.

Yes I think that’s what I’ve thought for a long time but because I always have something ‘sore’ or not quite ‘right’ I’m thinking I need to change what wellness is to me personally!
Karen says
Wellness to me is having the energy, fitness and body to do everything I need to do and want to do!

Thanks Karen for responding! Yes that’s a great yardstick.

I think to me wellness means a way of living almost where it all comes together. Sometimes this may seem like an unattainable goal but just because we dont have every piece of the jigsaw puzzle in the right place does not mean the jigsaw can never be completed or enjoyed in a partially complete state.
So for me, total wellness is getting out of bed every morning feeling well rested and ready for the day. Enjoying daily walks and enjoy exercise. Eating and enjoying good food. Having daily social interactions.

Thanks Joel, I love the jigaw analogy… I think I’m often looking for more pieces!!

Wellness to me is a sense of congruence and authenticity. It’s about feeling really present in life. To do that I need to be reasonably healthy, engaged in what I’m doing, present to whatever is happening even if it’s not perfect (which it never is), and aware. It’s a combination of physical, mental, and emotional, and acceptance of where I am.

Thanks so much Les for your comment, wellness really is a journey on all fronts isn’t it?!
Gina says
Wellness is taking care of your body with good eating habits and movement/exercise while listening to your body’s cues to care for and prevent injury and illness.
whatannabelcooks says
Thanks Gina… I like what you said about ‘wellness is taking care of your body’ – the process rather than the outcome.
Jacqueline says
I think I am feeling like I am achieving wellness when I feel calm, relaxed, effective at work and relationships and also when my body feels good. I think when I have the emotional and social and mental things in place my body usually feels good because I am choosing food for nourishment not to escape emotions or deal with stress.
whatannabelcooks says
Love your comment Jacqueline, like many others that have commented I like your balanced approach … not just physical wellness.
Darren says
For me it’s a healthy mind and body. There are so many things that contribute to that state as well. Trying to balance family, work, exercise, friends, etc will always be challenging but it’s a work in progress. Awesome post!!!
whatannabelcooks says
Thanks for commenting Darren, yes it’s perhaps a constant work in progress with little states of balance along the way!!
Jules @ Active + Nourished says
Great question Annabel! I think for me, wellness is the feeling of happiness combined with the physical benefits of good health.
whatannabelcooks says
Thanks Jules for reading and answering the question! I like the link of happiness – have you read ‘The Happiness Project’? A friend recommended it, I’d like to have a read!
Anna Sheinman says
Hello Annabel,
Wellness is a result of good daily habits. It consists of good health, financial freedom, good sleep, nutritious food and good relationship.

Thanks for taking the time to comment Anna. Love your definition – it certainly is broader than I initially believed 😉
