Have you every made a sugar body scrub or other homemade beauty products? Did you know you can make a body scrub out of coffee grinds? (That’s another post). Apart from eating ‘clean’ most of the time, over the last few years I have also been trying to reduce the amount of chemicals I expose my body too.
From moisturiser to foundation, mascara, shampoo (not a great success), to laundry detergent, I have been looking for products that are chemical free and far more ‘natural’. I am wanting to reduce my body’s ‘toxic load’. Whilst I don’t think you can ever totally remove chemicals from our lives, I am increasing hippy-ish and embracing reduced chemicals.
I have actually made my own body scrubs on and off over many years, not consistently, but often. Now that I have a nice growing collection of doTERRA essential oils, I thought it was time to get making them again. They are so EASY and cheap and quick! I have had a few friends over recently and we’ve made them together and it’s fun to smell what oils everyone likes in theirs? Relaxing or invigorating? I’m drawn to the invigorating oils, so I made mine with lemongrass and a couple of blends – Elevation and Smart & Sassy – think citrus, Ylang Ylang & Sandalwood. I think next time I’ll add a few drops of peppermint too! If you are somewhere in or near Brisbane and want me to come and run a sugar scrub workshop with your friends at your place, let me know annabel@whatannabelcooks.com.
Mixed with raw sugar and macadamia oil it’s perfect to scrub your arms and legs in the shower, leaving you nicely moisturised. You can use any number of carrier oils – jojoba, fractionated coconut, sweet almond, grapeseed etc.
Sugar Body Scrub with Essential Oils
- 1 jar
- raw sugar
- carrier oil
- essential oils – about 15-20 drops altogether
- Fill your jar with raw sugar to about 2/3 full.
- Slowly pour in your carrier oil and stir.
- Add enough oil to be somewhat runny but not too much – really it depends on the consistency you’d like.
- Add your essential oils & stir again.
- Done! Told you it was quick & easy.
This is about the consistency I went with:
So have the oil sitting in a layer above the sugar…
